National Poetry Month: Still Waiting

Still Waiting

Another sunset at her window

tracing hearts on the glass

She sits, and she remembers

when the church bells ring

The wedding dress fades sallow,

on a hanger in her wardrobe

She inhales cedar and mothballs

when the church bells ring

He had a charming smile

and he made her promises

Her heart still shatters

when the church bells ring

She waited for him that day

standing on the church steps

Now forever wondering why

when the church bells ring
