Three more drabbles this week, so enjoy. And be sure to pop back tomorrow as we start another October Fright Blog Hop. From October 10th-15th it will be six days of spooky fun.

Beware

What makes a monster?
A fearsome appearance, a primal nature? Are they outsiders, the ones who are different from you? Is it an outwardly quarrelsome nature, that disregard for society’s rules?
Perhaps, but those are not guarantees.
True monsters hide, keep their nature deep beneath the surface, under the smiles and polite conversation you expect. They are ones you trust, the ones you wouldn’t suspect, the ones that are good at pretending they’re human.
They are the monsters you should fear. The ones that blend among you, waiting, stalking.
The ones you never see coming.
Until it is too late.

Listen

The smell of rotting flesh lingers in these woods, a decay embedded in the trees, the soil, the air. It warns the foolish: Venture no further or die.
Ridiculous, you say? Ah, well, if you are that unwary, do what you must. But heed my words if you value your life. This accursed forest is the domain of the Spider Witch and she wants no trespassers.
Superstitious stories? Well, you can take that chance…I hear she likes to keep her food alive as she eats. It might take you days to die.
Oh, back to the village then? Good decision.

A Good Wife

Her voice annoys me, such a buzzing drone of a sound. She interrupts my work constantly with her complaints, her petty annoyances. Why must she come to me? A wife shouldn’t bother her husband so; she never used to be this petulant. At least she brought me a cup of tea this time.
I hate the sound of his voice, always so condescending, so arrogant. His work preoccupies his thoughts, leaves no time for me. The meager allowance he doles out barely keeps the household; another servant left this morning. I hate my husband. I’m glad I poisoned his tea.
