And in honour of the event, here’s a story for you all.

 

Stay With Me

 

I whisper his name at night, while the candle burns, while the rain pitter-patters on the roof of the cottage. I whisper his name while I carve, while I sew the stitches. I whisper his name, the name of the man I love.

The man that left me for another.

Under the moonlight I work, weave my magic and remember.

Oh, how he smiled at me, how he made my heart flutter. We laughed, we danced, we strolled the hillside under the moon. I told him stories of my coven, taught him spells. Until she crossed his path.

That dark-haired vixen, daughter of the miller.

She, with her swaying hips and bewitching smile. She lured him from me, and I screamed silently as she stole my life.  I watched him laugh with her, hold her parasol as they strolled the town, kiss her under our tree. And I watched, my heart shattering, when they married. I cried for days. Then I dried my tears and planned my vengeance.

First, I poisoned them. I enjoyed seeing the pair suffer, the long slow death my concoction caused, relished in their agony, their pain. I mourned at their funeral, my false face a look of sorrow. Inside I felt joy.

When it was over, when it was done, I dug up his corpse.

Now I spend each night carving out his innards and replacing them with stuffing and magic charms, sewing him whole, under my control, my witchcraft. When I am done, he will love me and only me.

Soon we walk together again, he and I, over our hill, kiss under our tree. Soon we will be together forever.
