The End of Time

I am the Keeper of the Hourglass, awaiting the hour of destruction, trembling in the bleak silence of the temple. Around me, the shadows lengthen and the winds howl against the walls; dread grips me. I pray to banish my doubt as his eyes stare at me, full of tears and his anguished wails blend with the wind.
I cannot falter in this sacrifice.
Raising the knife, I stab, plunging the blade into my son’s throat. With his blood, the hourglass shatters and the sands flow. Beneath my feet, the stone floor rumbles.
He is coming.
The world will burn.

Payment of Sins

“Dylan, please reconsider this action. It’s a harsh punishment.”
Dylan shook his head, glaring at his fellow Council judge. “I know all of you disapprove. Think Conner deserves leniency. I don’t. The sentence stands.”
The man sighed and walked away with one last remark, “They will shun you for this.”
Dylan shrugged. The oblivious opinions of his colleagues didn’t matter to him anymore. Only vengeance mattered.
A satisfied smile crept across his face. It wasn’t the present transgression Conner paid for, but the one from his past. Their past.
The one that cost him everything. The one that killed her.

Buried with Treasure

Jane grasped Larry’s hand. “It’s opening. We’ve done it.”
He nodded. “After all these years, all the ridicule. We’re rich.”
The pair pushed into the chamber, their lanterns lighting the recesses of an expanse filled with coffers, piles of gold, and jeweled statuettes; a packed treasure room of wonders. At the far end sat one crimson chest atop a dais.
Jane nudged Larry. “Let’s start with that one.”
Scurrying over, they pried open the top to behold a grinning skull. Red smoke swirled from its eyes, and a voice boomed, “Welcome to your tomb.”
Behind them, the door snapped shut.
