Black Ink and a Clown

Laughter in the center ring,
the big top spotlight parade
faded under the scrawl of ink

Effervescent fear crawled under
that painted smile, that white veneer;
red balloons became a warning

Innocence died with a contorted grin,
every chuckle, an echo of threat;
in the dark streets, the killer clown
