‘Tis that time of year once more, where the October Frights Blog Hop takes over, where writers of dark fiction assemble and spend a week celebrating the spooky season. From October 10th-15th we will present a cornucopia of creepy stories, terrifying books, and other horrors. There is also a book fair where you can check out the participants books.
For the opening day, I have two extra drabbles for you. And coming up this week I have a book spotlight, my annual dark poetry, some flash fiction, an art spotlight, and on the 15th, the launch announcement for Heyward and Andersen #4.
So sit back, enjoy, and keep the lights on…
The Mother of Monsters
I howl upon the night, an electric frisson of transcendental sound to stir the creatures of the earth. This is our moment, here beneath the full moon, as the edges of the sky turn blood red and the veil is thin.
“Come to me, my children, my monsters of the shadows. I summon thee.”
As they obey, sulphur permeates the air, the earth trembles, and the dead moan in their graves; my sweet younglings slither, creep, and crunch forward, gathering around my feet.
“Don’t worry, Mother is here. Come, let us wail at the moon before we begin the hunt…”
Shadows on the Corn
Beneath the grey sky, a scarecrow watched the cornfield, as fresh crimson splatter dripped off the dried stalks, and a chill wind stirred the dust. Shallow footprints disappeared with the blowing breeze, removing traces of the struggle as the damaged plants sagged to the ground. Deep in the rows, someone moaned, still alive, desperately crawling, as the flesh of what he was left a trail of blood and entrails for the crows. He made it a few more feet before his life trickled out into the soil.
In the distance, the scarecrow smiled, the edge of his mouth stained red.
