Never Again
Why did they bleed and die
for your freedom?
Never again, we said
yet hate won
and you threw it all away
Why did they bleed,
among the poppies, row by row?
Their ghosts will haunt your choices
all the victims, old and new
They are your consequences
Why did they bleed for you?
When you cast their sacrifice away?
To embrace the new iteration
of what they destroyed?

Your words run deep, dear poet. Remembrance Day has always been a significant, saddening day for me. Our family losses grew steadily over the years, yet the circumstances leading toward the eventual losses left me bereft.
How do we rationalize by any means, death by sword, bayonet, rifle, cannon ball, missile…my heart aches though by honour, valour, and bravery on the battlefield, open seas, and in the beauty of the skies above, reason defies consequences.
Still, we lower our flags and truly extend thanks and prayers for the fallen…and loved ones left behind. Can we never learn, lest we forget? I pray so.
