I moved my hand from the satchel, a charm tucked inside, before I answered, “It’s gone, where no one can ever find it again. It left here some time ago. You’re far too late to find the Grail, Michel.”
Anger flared in his eyes, and he shouted, “Non! You lie! This is a trick, a ruse to delay me. We have no time for such nonsense. Give me the Grail!” He reached out and grabbed my arm, but I squeezed the charm as his fingers tightened. He yelped, letting go as if his fingers were on fire. Which is probably how they felt. Protection charms burn like the dickens.
I gave him my best glare. “Hands to yourself, Michel.” He frowned but had the decency to look contrite. “And I’m not lying. The Grail’s gone and there’s nothing either of us can do about it. So why don’t you stop the bluster and tell me what you think is going on.” I softened my tone. “Maybe I can help.”
For a moment he hesitated, then, “No, you would not understand, and would not agree to what must be done. I must find another way.” Before I could react, he conjured an energy ball and tossed it my way. I clutched the protection charm as it hit me, but still got slammed to the floor.
