Drabble Wednesday: Whispers of Darkness

We’re talking a break from the penguins today with some unrelated drabbles to feed the darkness…
Enjoy.

Last Dance

Among the stark gravestones, indigo obscurity wafts against the voluminous moon, and the sweet strains of forgotten melody play on the hush of wind. Diaphanous light shifts, and a silver grey meld of ethereal substance steps from beyond the veil of death.
Two figures meet and dance, a raven-haired woman in white chiffon and a moldering skeleton wrapped in a cloak of filmy mist and ancient scattered dirt. Come together for an encore of their love, grief and longing joining them past the grave.
They will dance here, on moonlit nights, to remember life and death before parting once more…

Clipped Wings

I used to soar among the stars.
I glided within the inky void, barren of sound and light, dancing the edge of coronas and comets. I watched the birth of suns and planets, observed the demise of solar systems. Time was nothing, distance was both infinite and minuscule. I was witness to wonders and atrocities, and tears fell for each.
But most of all I was free.
There were no limits, no boundaries, no restrictions. The universe was mine, and I savoured glory of my eternal existence. That was before the war.
Now I am one of the Fallen.

Chosen

He stood at the edge of the village.
A silent figure in black.
The elders studied him, tried to communicate, but he said nothing.
I watched him from my home, afraid. I wanted to run, I should have run.
Instead, I went to him, one dark night.
He looked at me and smiled, and in a guttural voice, whispered, “At last, you have come.” He closed his eyes. “Fire burns. Fire cleanses. The Chosen will be reborn in fire.”
I erupted in a white hot flame and my world exploded. From that moment I knew only an eternity of pain.

  1. These are amazing and I’m torn between the 1st and 2nd one on which is my favorite. Some amazing descriptions like:

“Diaphanous light shifts, and a silver grey meld of ethereal substance steps from beyond the veil of death.”

“I watched the birth of suns and planets, observed the demise of solar systems. Time was nothing, distance was both infinite and minuscule. I was witness to wonders and atrocities, and tears fell for each.”

I’m vaguely reminded of T.S. Eliot with your work here. This is such gorgeous prose; so beautiful with poignancy, regret, wonder, and a life-death cycle. I’m still taking it all in, and honestly? I think this is one of the best things I’ve read today.
